Parity begins at home

We had to pick a headline from the list and make 5 rough images and 1 final image to be photocopied up as an A1 poster.

I'm pleased the last one and may end up making a better, bigger, colour version of it at a later date.

My final piece and the poster changed slightly from the design to the finished image, I reckon this was because I think of punk and the queen are two contrasting British institutions, so I wanted the point to be as clear as possible.
Black and white, you might say.

I did these in 2 batches basically..

batch 1 = A-K, M, O, P, S, T & X
I am especially pleased with A-D, G, P & S from this set.
Using different media, colours and selective collage is beneficial to the overall final look of these images, which I think are quite strong. I found that the yellow graph paper pleasing to the eye and I think it made my images more interesting.
In contrast, look at O, where I have drawn straight onto the graph paper. This image doesn't have the same impact, whereas if I had drawn the oatcake on white paper, cut that out and collaged it onto the yellow, it would have stood out more. Some of the others such as T are also a bit rushed and so don't look too hot.

batch 2 = L, N, Q, R & U-Z
In the second batch I started using felt tips, pencil crayons and markers.
L turned out pretty well, the main skin tone is crayon and the neck and boob shadows are felt tip. This worked out better than I expected really.
Q is wank. Would be acceptable with fineliner outline and maybe a bit of pattern. And if i could colour in within the lines...
I am content with W, Y & Z,
W & Y saw me using crosshatching technique for shading, I think this adds an interesting effect to the images. I could have done with carrying on with the sea in Y but my wrist hurt haha.
Z is mostly crayon, fineliner and blood red marker. It looks well scribbly like a really badly made comic but I think that adds to its charm more than anything.

(That's when ours was, I wasn't quite sure when it officially kicked off at the time of making this poster)

in the BA Illustration studio.

Basically just a lot of collected imagery, a warped photocopy, stencilled text, some edited text (that originally said: "Anything edible will be mashed into a pulp by the teeth, jaw and tongue")

I am quite comfortable working in punk style cut-n-paste, so this was pretty easy to piece together really. I think using warped photocopies as a background works quite well for black and white, as it has a textural material-like quality to it.

I also made this beast.

Mr. Palomar now resides in my kitchen/lounge in Halls.
His grey skin tone represents the greyness of his character. Always "umming and ahhing"
His eyes move in unison (not of their own accord) and his maxilla and mandible (thanks, Hunterian) are seperate so his mouth opens and he had a big foam tongue but it was rather rank so i didn't bring it home.

Originally, he was supposed to have an empty white box showing his mind and thoughts through projection. In the end he was a kind of minor part as most of the focus was on the animation, which was on a white curtain. I was behind the curtain operating the eyes, jaw and tongue.

It was a little bit shambolic on my part because I couldn't see what was going on and hadn't chance to rehearse as such! I enjoyed it though, it was a larf.
